Bowers College of Computing and Information Science at Cornell University has been named the university’s 17th provost. An expert in computer vision and graphics, Bala will succeed John Siliciano, professor of law in Cornell Law School, who has served as interim provost since July 1.

He previously served as president of Franklin and Marshall College from 2002– 2010, and as executive vice president at the University of Pennsylvania. A graduate of Lafayette College, he holds an MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business. Fry has served as president of Drexel University since 2010.

Edley spent more than two decades as a professor at Harvard Law School, where he and Orfield founded the Civil Rights Project in the aftermath of a 1996 court ruling that squelched race-conscious admission policies at many universities. Morial, the president of the National Urban League, also served as New Orleans Mayor from 1994-2002.

1 Most historical Black colleges and universities started in the 1860s and served first as elementary then secondary schools providing the newly freed slaves with a normal education. In 1854 , the American Missionary Association founded the first historical Black college and university which is currently called Lincoln University.
