That the humanities are in crisis will surprise exactly no one. Since the Great Recession of 2008, but especially after 2012, the share of majors in the humanities has continued to decrease precipitously among American college-goers. What’s behind this decline? No complex problem has a monocausal explanation.
It is often used as a research method in the social sciences and is typically used to study underserved populations and how they experience life—such as homeless youth, victims of trauma, and many more. As a faculty member, I often hear the blatant dismissal of students and their preoccupation with technology. The reality is very different.

As the body responsible for research under the Higher Education and Research Act (2017), UK Research and Innovation offers its own definition. The Royal Society adopts the same wording.
