Starting with programs for middle and high school students, through supports for graduate students, the Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) has provided inspiration, insight, encouragement, and community for engineering students.

In 2009, he returned to his undergraduate alma mater, Xavier University in New Orleans, an HBCU and the only Black Catholic institution in the world. Dr. Vernon Dunn, director of The Grainger Foundation Frontiers of Engineering at the National Academy of Engineers, first met Williams at one of the summer programs Williams ran at Xavier.

Jackson was a 2009 recipient of the Dr. John Hope Franklin Award but was recognized at this year’s American Council on Education (ACE) annual meeting in Washington, D.C. regrettably, the award ceremony was cancelled in 2009. I thought I could make more of a difference at MIT because of its unique role in science and engineering.”
