While nursing education should promote professional growth, collaboration, and mentorship, many nurse educatorsespecially those in tenure-track positionsexperience bullying from colleagues, senior faculty, or administrators. When bullying is added to these pressures, the result is often faculty disengagement or attrition.
Faculty learning communities (FLC) as an approach to improving pedagogy have their roots in 1979 when the first FLC was launched at Miami University by Dr. Milton D. FLCs provide faculty with the chance to work in a trans-disciplinary fashion on matters of importance to a cohort or a particular topic for the cohort to work on.
Instructors who use a Lightboard to teach difficult concepts to asynchronous online students also bring resident faculty expertise to the online space, non-dependent on the course facilitator. Conclusion Lightboards continue to present an open opportunity for educational institutions to bring faculty expertise to the online setting.
It’s inconvenient because faculty are stressed. So, when faculty come to me with a problem, they want an answer. Some of the faculty who want a quick fix already “get it,” meaning they come in valuing diversity and inclusion and/or come in with a strong critical analysis (think antiracist, feminist, queer, critical disability, etc.).
Additionally, it encourages collaboration, teamwork, and effective communication among students and faculty from various disciplines (Weinberg & Harding, 2004). An interdisciplinary approach helps students challenge assumptions, gain diverse perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of complex issues.
