The traditional model of higher education institutions in the UK has largely relied on student recruitment as the primary means of funding both staff salaries and research activities. In terms of research, there is far less recognition of excellence in education and scholarship compared to excellence in subject-specific research output.
Sometimes, this simply demands that you learn more about the society and culture around you or chalk up different perspectives to the rich experience of a global education. The fears of those around you are so far removed from your own experience that you are baffled by them. This week was one of those times. First a bit about me.
