As communitycolleges across the United States struggle with declining retention rates, it has become increasingly clear that institutional focus should not be limited to numbers alone. Faculty and staff should be encouraged to engage with students in meaningful ways that extend past classroom interactions.
For many communitycollege students, gateway math courses—required for entry into many programs of study—have functioned more like gatekeeper math courses.
