The consultation began in late 2023, with university officials proposing the idea to senior university management. On December 12, the plan was put through in a university court meeting – leading to up to 30 people facing redundancy and “facing a worrying start to the new year”, said the UCU.

European student housing sees smallest YoY price increase since 2021

Rent prices across most of Europe experienced a “consecutive slowdown in price increases” in 2023’s Q4, according to HousingAnywhere. The organisation’s international rent index for the final quarter of last year reported a year-on-year price increase of 5.8% – while still an increase, it was the lowest of the financial year – and the lowest since 2021.

Government to lose money on all student loans – even those repaid in full

The increased cost of borrowing has left the government with an £11bn annual shortfall, according to the IFS Student loans in England are expected to cost the government an extra £11bn a year as a result of higher interest rates massively increasing the cost of borrowing, according to analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies. The IFS said the huge additional cost was not reflected in either of the government’s official measures of the cost of student loans.
