Our goal over the past two years has been to reaffirm CAEs leadership within ACPA and the broader student affairs assessment community through a variety of initiatives and consistent communication. In the 2023-24 cycle, we established several programs, including the mentorship program, CAE awards, and a LinkedIn presence.
Another one is programreview systems. We do programreviews on the operational side. In addition, his bite-sized, practitioner-based articles on student success strategies, institutional planning & implementation, and educational leadership are implemented at institutions across the country.
President Welch (who prefers “Chuck” whenever possible) shared what inspired him to work in the education sector, leadership’s unique perspective, painful decisions for the good of the institution, and the value of authenticity and lived experience. Alexandria Technical and Community College Alexandria College, a public two-year comprehensive college in Minnesota with just under 4,000 students and offering 48 programs, has been assessing student satisfaction since 2008 on an every-other-year cycle. The relevant comments were shared with the leadership team.
We believe that this transformation requires informed and enlightened leadership by institutional trustees as well as administrators. These boards do not provide effective and efficient leadership because they are not staffed with appropriate board members and/or havent received the necessary training that all boards should have.
Engage executive leaders in data governance efforts On a slightly more macro level, I recommend establishing effective campuswide data governance and ensuring your executive leadership team is engaged in the effort.
In each session, the fellows gained depth in new topics or terrains, developed leadership skills, and built a network with peers from institutions across the country. Projects addressed topics such as programreview, data strategy, budget models, enrollment growth, and more.
Institutions have gone about this in multiple ways, including advisory boards of business people who give deans their perspectives on what is needed, use of adjuncts to do course development, and the programreview process by which external reviewers give their input on curricula.
We are in favor of better institutional programreviews. There will be a great need for work and coordination between the institutional registrar, provost, financial aid, and distance education leadership to make policies and implement the required technical changes. There will be a cost.
